Artist Bio
I took my first pottery class at Pullen Arts Center in Raleigh NC. It was an introductory class to wheel throwing and I was immediately hooked! I loved getting my hands in clay.
Since then, I’ve explored many different clay bodies and techniques for creating, decorating, and firing ceramics. However, there is always something new to learn with clay.
Now, I live in my childhood home in Morganton, NC. In 2020, I started Fig & Owl Studio. I converted my Dad’s detached garage into a ceramic studio and committed to improving my craft.
In the future, I want to share my love of pottery through classes and workshops. I always have a goal!
Artist Statement
When I found pottery, I was hooked. To start with a few pounds of clay and then create a bowl or vase in minutes was just magical. And still, the way the clay responds to slight changes on pressure is amazing.
After years using the wheel, I shifted to hand building. This approach lets me explore constructing unique forms. I can also apply textures to forms more naturally using this technique. I can make marks using stamps and tools (some that I’ve made myself), doilies, fabric with cross stitch, or things I’ve found in nature.
I also like to create textures that seem organic or reference nature. With ceramics, I can bring all my interests to the process such as drawing, problem solving, design, nature, and the exploration of texture. It is endlessly satisfying.
