Rabbit Hole Earrings
Artist: April Hale
As a child I had a beautifully illustrated and complex Alice in Wonderland pop-up book. The page which depicts Alice falling down the rabbit hole had a spiral of paper with Alice suspended on a string in the middle. I did not make these earrings with that book in mind, but when I look at them, I am reminded of that complex, yet simple depiction of the rabbit hole. The ovals, instead of being flat, are slightly curved, which gives them a dimensionality while also appearing weightless. When viewed from the front, these bold, lightweight earrings resemble abstracted bird wings, but when seen from the side reveal bright, concentric ovals.
Made with three separate, freely hanging concentric ovals, these earrings are made entirely by hand with 100% recycled sterling silver. They measure approximately 2 1/2 inches long by 1 inch wide. The oval hoops hang from a soldered loop, so these earrings can stand up to Central Montana wind gusts and Tennessee tornadoes. Okay, maybe I’m exaggerating a little, but they are very sturdy despite their delicate appearance!
