Cloisonné is an enameling technique that consists of attaching delicate sterling silver strips, bent to the outline of a design and filling the resulting cellular spaces, called cloisons (French: “partitions” or “compartments”), with vitreous enamel. Multiple layers of enamel are added and the piece is fired after each additional layer. The final piece is ground smooth and fire-polished.
