I originally thought I was going to do this large painting and feature Stellar Jays, which we often see in winter. After I drew the initial image I thought how fun it would be to paint cardinals instead. I've often seen cardinals paired with winter aspen although it's not something you would see here in Montana. Artistic license is a wonderful thing!  And... I think those Stellar Jays will still make an appearance down the road.
